DISCOVERY; It was time to find out. Another expensive import beckoned. Another trip to Oarfolks. This German band called Can. What were they about? More space-jazz than Gong? Or would their sound reflect superior German engineering? Part with the cash or you'll never find out! And obviously, I had to find out...

WHERE & WHEN; So I guess Soon Over Babaluma wasn't anything like I thought it would be. It wasn't space-jazz at any rate. It was like background music that required close listening. You'd put the record on, pay attention for a little while, drift off and come back. "Is this a different song?" "Was that side one or two?" Then, maybe a couple weeks later, rinse and repeat. There was enough going on to keep you coming back and maybe buy another album by Can some day.

As there weren't many bands coming out of Germany I naturally assumed all of Germany would be listening to Can. A European adventure trip was being planned for the spring by the high school choir. I was in the bass section learning how to sing. I discovered several things during the trip. (Holland, West Germany, Austria) One thing I learned, that far from being the most popular band in Germany (that was Roger Whittaker) no one I met had ever even heard of Can. The other thing I learned was that if you go off exploring a big city like Frankfurt instead of sticking with the group, the adults in charge of seeing everyone gets home safely are bound to freak out and with good reason.

HIGHLIGHTS; All of it!

STATUS; Must Have
