DISCOVERY; The guitarist from the Gong album working with Todd Rundgren and Rundgren's Utopia/Ra band. This was bound to be amazing right? And look, his hair was almost as long as mine at the time. Hippy sheik sells another record.
WHERE & WHEN; I bought Ra and L at the same time. Comparing the two albums. Ra got played a handful of times and shelved. L survived and thrived! At the time, L was a near perfect soundtrack for the space-based adventures of my teenage wild life. Om Nama Shivaya played so many times I couldn't count, mix tapes and such like, it was and still is one of my favourite pieces of that ilk. And normally when a rock musician does a cover it feels to me like a complete waste of time especially covering a Beatles song. Hillage is an exception. His version as much a classic as the original. Not sure how that's done. Perhaps it's the sincerity of the artist that shines through on L? That might be it you know. I think what you hear on this album is an artist who really believed in the power of music to communicate and connect people. This album lives and breathes, it shouldn't, but it does.
