DISCOVERY; Of the two Roxy Music albums with Eno, I picked this, their second, simply because I liked the album cover better than their first. I thought the first album looked cheesy and worried the music would sound cheesy too. I suppose you could argue their album covers were stylish and ground breaking. I just thought they were exploitive, a cheap way to draw attention to your album and misleading. The lady with the panther on a leash wasn't the singer! She wasn't even the guitar player. In fact, not in the band at all! Thinking about it, with the exception of a few songs by Yoko Ono, my collection at this point was very male-centric. Maybe glam rock was an attempt to bridge the gap because there weren't many women in rock n roll at this point. I was oblivious at any rate, happy to collect records from the handful of artists I was into whether I approved their aesthetics or not.
WHERE & WHEN; It took me a while to warm to this album. The Bogus Man was the only song I actually liked right from the start so I listened to side two quite a lot. The title track is exceptionally brilliant. These days I regard this album very highly, the quality of the recording is stunning and the songs hold up well over time. I'd go so far as to say this album is their best work. It's the sort of album you listen to in your dream home on your dream stereo overlooking a dream lake...
