DISCOVERY; To an extent, I would buy albums because I thought they'd look good in the collection, only to discover I either liked them or didn't. (still do!) With Neil Young I had no idea, other than hearing Southern Man once or twice, that was it. The album cover looked good and I knew he was popular with the long haired, pot smoking, adult contemporary set. Who were the contemporary adults in 1976? I could at least find out what they were listening to. Mostly crap as it turns out but I liked this album.

WHERE & WHEN; Neil Young was capable of writing emotionally charged social commentary wrapped in gorgeous melodies sung in a world weary fragile style, one foot in the backwoods, one foot in the city. A stranger in a strange land kind of experience. Thing is, I can totally admire his song writing, I can listen to any of the early albums quite happily but I have little desire to return to any of it. Little desire isn't the same as no desire whatsoever. So yes, this album is a must have for that rare celestial alignment that requires a stellar Neil Young album for the soundtrack.

HIGHLIGHTS; All of it.

STATUS; Must Have
