DISCOVERY; Lets talk about some of the records I had that I didn't like but kept anyway. This album by Rush is one such album. At this point I was starting to buy albums by Ritchie Blackmore, ELO, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, The Allman Brothers. You had to buy the albums to have a listen back then. There were no 30 second samples on Amazon or YouTube videos or streaming services. If they weren't playing it on the radio and your friends didn't have it, you had to buy it. Not that I hated these bands, the records just failed to spark with my quirky demands. Caress of Steel is something of an exception. It's the only Rush album I've ever entertained mainly down to atmosphere. Atmosphere and the most amazing guitar solo.
WHERE & WHEN; Yes, this is an annoying album. Rush is an annoying band. I wouldn't play this album for anyone expecting them to like it. And yet, for me, it holds a certain charm. I suppose there are times when you just want something jarring to shake up that familiar and comfortable mundane musical space you create, like a Charles Mingus record or something by The Dead Kennedys. Rush isn't anything like either of those of course but it is annoying and sometimes you need that.
HIGHLIGHTS; Just that one amazing guitar solo.
STATUS; Must Have Maybe
