DISCOVERY; Ma liked to go to the same stores all the time. We had that in common. There was a Target Store on Coon Rapids Blvd in 1971. The records were quite near the front of the store. Knowing exactly where each department of the store was, was and still is very important. So I don't get lost! I don't want to discover anything new when I'm just there to get one thing, so don't go changing your store around all the time (at all) if you want me to be happy. At the Target Store I could divide my time between the record department and the toy department. Building models was the other clever thing I liked to do. I liked best not to follow the instructions. The store and my Ma both looked something like that photo. My new Beatles record is probably in that shopping cart!

I'll tell you about looking through record bins. I still do it to this day. Even though I was only ever going to buy a Beatles album I still looked through all the bins, learning where to find the album jackets that were cool. And so I didn't look like some kind of fanatic gazing at the photos of his favourite group. I could be an adoring fan at home. In public one must act nonchalant at all times. Oh, and finding a new record by your favourite group is always pretty cool.

WHERE & WHEN; My 11 year old brain initially only liked the Paul McCartney songs and Harrison's Taxman. The others were grating and scary. Fairly soon after this I got the sheet music for a handful of Beatles songs so I could play them on the piano. Mrs Foley (my piano teacher) was all for it. Perhaps I made more of an effort when it came to music I liked. My Ma liked when I played Yellow Submarine on the piano. I changed it one day years later. Changed the order of the notes and played it in a minor key. She didn't like that version.

This album got played in the summer time in the basement. Julie and I would retreat to the basement to keep cool when the days got really hot. Directly under the two bedrooms, the large besment room had been upgraded. The fireplace was centred with the chimney running up the outside of the house. The walls had been panelled with with a dark pine. A bar put in where the old root cellar was. The bar had a phone. The old refrigerator sat next to the door. There was a large 'Davenport' which folded out into a bed opposite the fireplace. We'd camp down there in hot weather and listen to the buzzy plastic stereo.
