DISCOVERY; I'd been aware of Emerson, Lake & Palmer since watching the California Jam on TV. California Jam was broadcast on ABC in segments but my foggy memory is of a live event broadcast as it happened, me sat in front of the telly for hours, popcorn and tape recorder. Evidently my memories differ from reality but I prefer my version. Broadcast live on ABC Wide World of Sport all day special event. "We're interrupting our regular boring golf game to bring you The California Jam!" Something along those lines. There were a bunch of bands, mostly pretty horrible. Black Sabbath were a curious group but I thought the singer was fat. Deep Purple was OK but a bit style over substance. Black Oak Arkansas was a kind of novelty act. The Eagles... country music? Earth Wind & Fire... dance troupe? Seals and Croft... easy listening "soft rock". I wasn't actually sure golf wasn't more interesting than some of that but hey ho, Jim Dandy to the rescue.

The only bit of that all day concert event that stuck with me was the set by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Figuring out which album to buy was just down to the cover art. Get the coolest record cover and it will have the coolest music. Used to be just that simple.

WHERE & WHEN; When I fell in with the punk rock elitists in my early 20s it became necessary to ditch or at least deny owning albums like Brain Salad Surgery. Fitting in was never a strong suit.

HIGHLIGHTS; All of it

STATUS; Must Have
