DISCOVERY; Lets go over to Mark's house and check out his record collection. Listening to records at Mark's house was an analytical process first and foremost. His parents, both music teachers, had a huge record collection. All classical and jazz. Albums coming into that environment had to meet certain standards of musicality. Sure, music was fun, but it should also be intelligent and have a degree of difficulty. Above all it should not be crass. The first rock record he showed me was by Procol Harum. We listened to it but it made no impression at all. I think it was the token rock record in their collection. The first album that got to live in his room was Dark Side of the Moon which did make an impression, a big one.
WHERE & WHEN; Listening to this with Mark on that sunny afternoon is one of those experiences not to be duplicated. I was absolutely floored by this record. The future of music is here! A brilliant record, a work of genius, but when I hear this music now I hear the structure on which it's built. I appreciate the construction, I really do but somehow the album has never generated the same magic achieved the very first time I heard it.
I wouldn't own a copy of this album until the late 90s Cheapo runs. Never felt like I needed a copy. It's ubiquitous, everyone has it but in truth it enters the collection at number 36 because it entered my consciousness that summers day in 1974 at Mark's house. The force is strong with this record.
HIGHLIGHTS; Start to finish classic.
