DISCOVERY; In those days I used to study the TV listings. Scheduling my time around perceived entertainments. Becoming a slave to the TV is a terrible waste of a life but that's where I was at. To be fair, I wouldn't have seen the McCartney special if I hadn't studied the listings that Sunday. Glued like a fly on fly paper I was. Paul McCartney and his new band on the telly. They played Big Barn Bed and I thought the future of rock is here! Exceptionally cool song.
WHERE & WHEN; I had high hopes for this album when I brought it home from the new release rack. I had the uneasy feeling after listening to it first time that I'd been duped. Side two especially light on holding power. I ended up just playing Big Barn Bed a lot and generally skipping the rest of the album. Listening to it again years later with my daughter I realised Loup (1st Indian on the Moon) made revisiting side two worth while but that's not saying much. Listening to it again much more recently I found a little more form in the lighter songs but nothing could redeem the "Medley" at the end. It taints an otherwise exhaustively light album which make me want to delete the offending drivel and a couple others including My Love and cobble a better play list from the bonus tracks. There was certainly enough material at the time to create one good album.
HIGHLIGHTS; Big Barn Bed - Get On The Right Thing - One More Kiss - Single Pigeon - Loop (1st Indian on the Moon) --- including the bonus tracks --- Hi, Hi, Hi - Live And Let Die - I Live Around - The Mess - 1882
STATUS; The 2018 2CD package has enough tracks to re-imagine Red Rose Speedway as a very good single LP. Not too much of a stretch there...
