DISCOVERY; The final album from Mr Smith's Box. There were other records, of course there were but either I didn't listen to them (Peter, Paul & Mary) or it sounded like god-awful noise to my tender ears (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) so it was in my 13th year there were but three non-Beatle albums to illuminate the darkness. Dylan's wordy masterpiece, The Stones decadent masterpiece and Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention celebrating American culture with wit, cynicism and the most incredible music I had ever heard! I could only imagine music like this and there it was unfolding note by note as I sat in stunned silence. Like something from my sub-conscious manifested in full stereophonic glory. I had been saved!

WHERE & WHEN; Of course the tape wasn't stereo. The sound quality was extremely poor. I marvel that I could listen to them at all. It was a form of close listening I suppose and in truth the sound wasn't worse than a transistor radio. These were the dark times remember. I couldn't just rip the CD to my sound library bluetoothed to every sound device in the house or worse yet, get one of those unholy subscriptions to a streaming music service... don't get me started! Why did you bring it up? Because music meant something when it was harder to come by. The music on Absolutely Free was as precious as gold to me.

HIGHLIGHTS; Every note!

STATUS; Must Have
