DISCOVERY; I almost got The Who By Numbers because I heard the song Squeeze Box once and thought it was pretty good (Who lite) but instead I dived in the deep end with this great behemoth (Who not lite) having heard not one note previously. I guess the only Who song I'd ever heard more than once was I Can See For Miles (proper Who). Of course I'd read all about how genius this album was, great rock opera blah-de-blah like its predecessor ground breaking Tommy which I'd also not heard a single genius note. So I was buying a Who double album because you've got to start some place.
WHERE & WHEN; I'm not terribly interested in what an artist is trying to say. Books, records, movies. I derive my own meaning from these things. Proper opera is good that way because I don't understand the language and refuse to read synopsis or librettos. Rock opera, sung in English, about some kid getting into some scrapes. That's about all I know about Quadrophenia and that's more than I want to know. Is it about Quadrophonic sound systems? Are there in fact four distinct elements to the story? Four dimensions in spacetime? Who is Doctor Jimmy? Is he a GP? Why did I buy this record?
At first I thought this album was a load of rubbish but it's grown on me over the years probably because I haven't heard it in a very long time. I keep it on the list of albums I should have a copy of because I can remember listening to it for the first time in my basement room trying to convince myself I hadn't wasted my money. Those are good discussions to have with yourself from time to time. That alone makes this a good album.
