DISCOVERY; Not much left to get from the Beatles catalogue. I didn't know anyone who had this album, so it seemed a bit late in the day to finally be getting around to it. And amazing as it undoubtedly is as a work of art, I guess I was just a little disappointed. Not sure what I expected. Holding off for so long on listening to their biggest, most important album, I expected to be completely wiped out by it. No, the album would have to grow on me. It did.

WHERE & WHEN; The time I listened to this with Mark Foley stands out. If, during the orchestral crescendo in A Day In The Life you shake your head back and forth with the rhythm of the piece it's... well it's the sort of thing a couple of nerdy young boys would do. A drug-free trippy experience.

This is an album you might find yourself listening to because someone else has put it on. It's playing and nothing you can do except listen. Maybe not as loud as you would ordinarily and maybe people are talking and not really paying attention. (It happens!) Just let it be and don't get too hung up about which songs you like best or how can people talk while music is playing? Take it as a whole. Take it as a cultural artefact which has been experienced by millions of people. Isn't it strange and wonderful? You're part of something bigger than yourself.
